The Visual Representation of Scientific Data through Immersive Technology

At Keyowa, our mission has always been to take the complex and make it clear, turning abstract research into experiences people can see, feel, and connect with. The Visual Representation of Scientific Data through Immersive Technology project embodies that vision bringing dense research to life in a way that is not only accessible but also deeply engaging.

From Research to Script

Every great story starts with raw material. In this case, it was research data dense, technical, and full of insight. Our first step was to fully understand the research, distilling it down into key ideas that would shape both the narrative and the visuals.

From there, we created a script a blueprint that transformed scientific findings into a journey. The script guided character development, environment choices, and on-screen visuals, ensuring that everything on screen had both narrative and scientific purpose.

Science Meets Visual Thinking

With the script in place, we moved into storyboarding. This process allowed us to explore the flow of information visually, sketching ideas into 2D comic-style sequences. The storyboard became a bridge between research and art, ensuring that the scientific message stayed intact while giving us creative space to experiment with visuals.

Character Design: The 2D–3D Dilemma

Initially, we envisioned the project as a 2D animation. But we quickly encountered limitations: character movement in 2D restricted the expressive range we needed.

So, we pivoted starting with vector-based 2D designs, then translating them into 3D models. This shift gave us the flexibility and range of motion we needed while retaining the illustrative charm of 2D.

To keep the character visually consistent with our 2D environments, we used a hybrid approach: 3D characters with 2D facial features. This gave the illusion of flat, hand-drawn characters while allowing for fluid, lifelike animation.

The Challenge of Blending Worlds

One of the biggest creative challenges was seamlessly blending 2D and 3D elements so they felt part of the same world. Our solution? A flat-shading pipeline stripping out shadows, simplifying textures, and relying on bold, vibrant colours to make assets pop. This approach not only unified the look but also gave the final animation a distinctive, stylised charm.

Balancing Science and Style

As a creative team, it’s tempting to lean into fun, playful visuals. But we knew this project carried weight: it was about communicating research authentically. Our mantra was simple never sacrifice the science for style. The balance came through voice over narration. While the visuals leaned cartoon and colourful, the voice over carried the authority of the research. Together, they struck a balance: engaging for the public, yet credible to the scientific community.

Accessibility at the Core

What surprised us most was how our stylistic choices impacted production. By adopting flat, stylised shaders, we reduced render times dramatically per-frame time dropped by over 99.17%, and total render time was cut by 99.72%. What was originally projected to take days was completed within hours. This meant we could hit tight deadlines without compromising quality a rare but powerful balance in creative production

The Outcome: Science Reimagined

The final animation achieved what we set out to do: transform abstract data into a visual journey that was inclusive, engaging, and scientifically faithful. It showed that when research meets creativity, and when accessibility is prioritised from the start, science becomes not just understandable but unforgettable
